I have a Sony reciever and dvd combo home entertainment system and the sub woofer doesn’t make a sound?

After I hooked everything up and everything was working fine and when I got to plugging in the sub it didn’t respond to the movie I was watching. What should I do?

throw it in the trash and buy either Bose or technics
